In mining and water‑diversion tunnel construction, the 2m×2m small‑section horizontal tunnel features extremely limited working space. Equipment selection directly determines mucking efficiency and whether the machine can be transported underground. Many standard large‑size models cannot fit into such tunnels. Do not rely merely on nominal model parameters. It is critical to strictly check overall dimensions, traveling mode, power configuration and conveying structure to avoid purchasing equipment that cannot work on‑site.

  1. Mandatory Clearance Requirements for Tunnel Passage

For a tunnel with net section of 2m width × 2m height, the machine shall not operate closely against walls or roof. Safety clearance must be reserved.
Recommended overall machine width ≤1.5 m, overall machine height ≤1.8 m. Leave 20‑25 cm clearance on each side to prevent scraping against rock walls and underground pipelines.

Note: Do not trust product descriptions simply marked “suitable for 2‑meter tunnel”. Always check maximum overall width and total height including handrails and hydraulic pipelines. Handrails and hydraulic assemblies may increase outer dimensions and make the machine unable to enter 2m×2m tunnels.

1.Width: preferred overall width 1.3‑1.5 m. Models over 1.65 m are not recommended, as insufficient clearance will interfere with mine‑car passing.

2.Height: keep total height within 1.8 m. For uneven tunnel roof, select models with foldable handrails and lowered operator cabin.

3.Turning performance: choose zero‑radius or skid‑steer machines for small‑section tunnels. Smaller turning radius reduces the need for tunnel reaming.

2.1 4‑wheel‑drive tire mucking loader (for hard floor, gradient ≤12°)

Suitable for 2m×2m horizontal tunnels with solid floor, little water and gentle slope.
‑ Advantages: fast traveling speed, easy maintenance, light weight and narrow body, ideal for short‑distance tunneling mucking. Solid rubber tires resist punctures from sharp rock fragments.
‑ Disadvantages: prone to slipping and sinking on muddy soft ground. Not recommended when gradient exceeds 12°.
‑ Recommended model: narrow‑body ZWY‑60/80wheel‑type mucking loader, overall width 1.3‑1.5 m, mucking capacity 60‑80 m³/h, directly loading for mine cars.

2.2 Track‑type mucking loader (for soft floor, wet ground & steep gradient)

Choose track‑type units for muddy floor, fractured surrounding rock and gradient over 12°.

Note: Standard 80‑series track mucking loaders normally reach width above 1.7 m. Standard 80 track models are too wide for 2m×2m tunnels. Custom narrow‑chassis version is required to compress overall width within 1.5 m.

‑ Advantages: large ground contact area, anti‑sinking performance and strong climbing capacity for harsh ground conditions.
‑ Disadvantages: lower traveling speed, higher track wear‑and‑tear.

  1. Conveying System: Scraper Conveyor vs Belt Conveyor

1.Scraper chain conveyor: Preferred for blasted large rock fragments, hard rock and inclined tunnels. Materials hardly slide backward. Resistant to impact from sharp stones with low failure rate, widely adopted in small‑section mining tunnels.

2.Belt conveyor: Fit for soil, coal slag and small‑size materials under gentle gradient. Lower noise and lighter weight. Not recommended for hard sharp rock, which may cut the belt.

For unloading section: select mucking loader with foldable rear conveyor frame. Folded dimension facilitates transportation through narrow tunnels and shaft cages.
  1. Power System Selection

1.Coal mine underground: Must adopt flame‑proof explosion‑proof units with explosion‑proof motor and MA safety certification. Ordinary non‑explosion‑proof diesel machines are forbidden underground.

2.Metal mine & water‑diversion tunnel
‑ Poor ventilation: electric explosion‑proof type is preferred with zero exhaust gas to improve underground working environment.
‑ Good ventilation: explosion‑proof diesel version for flexible mobility without long trailing cables.
‑ For long tunneling distance: hybrid diesel‑electric power is optional.

  1. Optional Auxiliary Functions

1.Where large boulders occur after blasting, auxiliary breaker hammer is optional for on‑site rock breaking and reduce manual secondary handling.

2.Given limited space in 2m×2m tunnel, avoid oversized auxiliary attachments to prevent exceeding outer dimension limits.

3.Ensure the digging arm covers full cross‑section for complete mucking and minimize manual bottom‑cleaning work.

  1. Matching with Haulage Equipment

Mine cars for 2m×2m small‑section tunnel are also dimension‑restricted. The unloading height of mucking loader shall match mine‑car height to avoid material spilling. Prioritize small mine cars and shuttle cars; large haulage equipment is not suggested.

1.Do not only refer to nominal applicable section data. Always request actual measured dimensions: maximum overall width and total machine height.

3.For hard floor and gentle slope: 4‑WD narrow‑body tire mucking loader is preferred. For soft floor and steep slope: custom narrow‑chassis track‑type machine.

4.Scraper conveyor for hard rock conditions; explosion‑proof certification is mandatory for coal‑mine applications.

5.Confirm underground transportation method. If lowering through shaft cage, machine dimensions must fit cage opening. Split‑structure for underground assembly is available when necessary.

The 2m×2m horizontal tunnel counts as extreme small cross‑section. Choose moderately smaller‑size equipment with sufficient safety clearance. Only smooth passage guarantees actual mucking performance.
